The Government First Grade College building in town is in a dilapidated condition.

The building, which houses the College, also lacks basic facilities.

The government had sanctioned a degree college to Madikeri in 2007. As the college did not have its own building, it was decided to start the classes in the buildings of the Government High School and the PU College.

Now, a decade later, the First Grade College is yet to get its own building.

The old building that houses the College is crying for attention as it might collapse ‘any moment’.

A total of 310 students are pursuing BA, BCom and BBA courses in the College. Also, the College has 30 faculty members.

Rainwater seeps into the building from the roof. The doors and windows have been damaged. Even use of the toilets is difficult as they are not cleaned on a daily basis.

Even the staff room leaks during monsoon. Plastic sheets have been used to protect the staff members from getting drenched in the rain.

A guest lecturer, on condition of anonymity, said, “There are no chairs and tables in the staff room. We have to use the chairs after the permanent lecturers leave for their classes. We have appealed to the authorities concerned to take action. In spite of it, no new chairs have been provided for the staff room of the College.”

The parents of the students at the College have urged the authorities to construct a new building for the College at the earliest.
