More than 200 people took ill after drinking contaminated water at Thadakoda village in the taluk on Monday.
They fell ill after drinking water from a tap installed in a drainage.
As many as 24 people have been admitted at Garaga Primary Health Centre, the district hospital and the German Hospital in Dharwad. As many as 90 people are receiving treatment as outpatients. A few of those who fell sick are receiving treatment at private hospitals in the taluk.
After the incident, water supply has been stopped to taps installed in the drainage.Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P A Meghannanavar has ordered that water be supplied to taps only after pipes are installed on the drainage.
A fair
As the village hosted the Veerabhadreshwara fair, residents of Thadakoda village had several guests from neighbouring villages.The guests too fell sick after drinking contaminated water.
“Three ambulances, two doctors and other staffers have been deployed in the village to provide succour to the affected. Post-afternoon, no fresh cases were reported,” said District Health Officer Dr N M Angadi.
Though it has been said that contaminated water is responsible for people falling ill, water samples have been sent to the laboratory for testing. The results are awaited on Tuesday, he said.
Among those who have fallen ill, women and children are in large numbers.
In the past six months, this is the second incident of water contamination, said the villagers.
