33,417 households receive job cards under NREGS in Udupi

  The hundred days of employment scheme has been doing well besides offering income security to the people residing in the rural areas of the district. 

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Chief Executive Officer of Udupi Zilla Panchayat Pranesh informed that as many as 0.12851 lakh households have been incorporated in the scheme as on date during the current financial year. The total fund allocated for the purpose during the current financial year is Rs 8.88 crore, of which Rs 4.04 crore has already been spent. As many as 2,632 works have been taken up under the programme, of which 136 have been completed while 2,496 are under progress. As many as 33,417 households have received job cards in the district. Currently 9,912 households are working under NREGS. 

Works related to flood control, rural connectivity, water conservation and water harvesting, renovation of traditional water bodies, drought proofing, irrigation canals, and irrigation facilities to SC, ST, and land development were taken up under the project and very few of them have been suspended during the period. Majority of the works were completed as per the chalked out plan and the day wise attendance percentage of the labourers was optimistic.

Kundapur taluk has registered maximum of all the three taluks in the category of period wise employment provided. Udupi is second in the chart.

The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is a ray of hope in the district inspite of the hue and cry by the labourers demanding hike in the wages offered, the CEO added.
