He was speaking at a workshop organised at the auditorium of the Zilla Panchayat, for the benefit of the 50 grama panchayats, which have been selected to be prepared for this year’s ‘Nirmala Grama Puraskar’ for the year 2009-2010.
The workshop was attended by the presidents of these grama panchayats, secretaries and nodal officers, presidents of the taluk panchayats and all the members of the zilla panchayats, here on Tuesday.
“ Villagers need to put in sincere efforts for the village to get Nirmal Gram award. Every house, school and anganwadis in the village should have toilets. The open space in the village should be free of human waste. Solid and liquid waste management should be adequate. The village should be clean and healthy. Only if each of this conditions are met with can the village hope for getting the award,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, ZP CEO G V Rangarao said around 150 villages were selected to be considered for the award. But since 2005-06 the scheme has been slacking. At least 10 villages have to totally sanitised for the award. But only two villages of Bangarpet, Karalli and Chinnakote, fulfil all the parameters prescribed. Now for the 2009-10 50 villages have been identified,” he said.
ZP president M Srinivasan who inaugurated the workshop said “ the funds released for the Swachchata Andolana has been misappropriated in some instances. At least in the future it should be properly utilised.”
During the interactive session, several villagers mentioned that their villages lacked Anganwadi and school buildings and sanitation was not the actual immediate problem. However they were advised how to keep up sanitation within the available system.
A documentary was screened to create awareness about sanitation. The GP presidents and secretaries of both Karalli and Chinnakote were felicitated on the occasion.
