Mangaluru: The body of B M Mumtaz Ali ( 52), a business man who went missing in the wee hours of Sunday, was found in the Phalguni river near Kuloor bridge on Monday morning. The mortal remains have been shifted to a private hospital.

Mumtaz Ali is the brother of former MLA B A Mohiyuddin Bava and former MLC B M Farooq.

The city police, fire and emergency personnel including SDRF, NDRF and Coast Guard personnel had launched a search operation after he went missing. His car was found parked near Kuloor bridge on Sunday.

The search operation was carried out on Sunday night. Initially, a missing complaint was registered by Ali’s daughter at Kavoor station.

Six booked

The Kavoor police have booked a case against six persons on charges of extortion in connection with the case, said Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal.

Based on the complaint by Ali’s brother Hydar Ali, the police booked a case under sections 308 (2), 308 (5), 351 (2), 190 of BNS Act against Rehamath, Abdul Sattar, Shafi, Mustafa and Sohaib, Siraj.

In his complaint, he has accused all six of blackmailing him and extorting money.

The complainant accused all the six of conspiring to tarnish the image of Mumtaz Ali who had been active in public life for over 30 years.

It is alleged that the accused extorted more than Rs 50 lakh from him since July 2024, by threatening to spread rumours about an illicit relationship with a woman. They also allegedly took Rs 25 lakh through a cheque and encashed it and were demanding more money.

The investigation is currently underway.
