The Finance department has given its clearance for the recruitment of an additional 8,500 constables, Home Minister K J George said on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, George said the police department had already recruited 4,500 constables and the process for new recruitments would commence soon.

He said the holiday allowance given to police personnel for working on public holidays would be hiked to Rs 400 from Rs 200 per day. Necessary clearance had been sanctioned by the Finance department.

The daily allowance for Home Guards has been fixed at Rs 400 per day in Bengaluru and Rs 325 in other places in the State, he said.

Replying to queries, George said the State had received confirmation from the CBI that it would be investigating the lottery racket as sought by the State government.

He said the CID had submitted a report to the chief secretary on the seizure of Rs 4.37 crore cash from an apartment belonging to senior IAS officer Kapil Mohan and his family. It was for the chief secretary to decide on the next step of  action, he said.

To a query on poll-related violence being reported from his constituency, Sarvagnanagar, George said the police had made some seizures based on the complaints they had received. He had nothing to do with it, he added.
