The huge electronic Variable Message Signboard (VMS) at Kempapura cross, Hebbal on Air Port Road will soon begin flashing alerts about delayed arrival/departure of flights to facilitate the passengers.
“The City traffic police are in touch with the BIA officials. The BIA flashes alerts on its websites about the delayed flights’ arrival/departure. All we need to do is to connect BIA’s link with Traffic Management Centre (TMC) from where alerts can be flashed on the VMS boards,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic & Security) Praveen Sood told Deccan Herald.
The response from BIA has been positive, Sood added. The work has already begun and in a month or so, VMS will start beaming the scrolling messages.
One of the causes for accidents on Devanahalli Road is overspeeding. Many passengers and cab drivers indulge in over speeding when they are late to catch flights and end up causing accidents. If informed about the flights’ status through VMS boards, such passengers can change travel plans or slow down avoiding the possibility of accident.
Sood had suggested the idea of flashing alerts on Airport Road VMS board during the inauguration of the four VMS on April 7. Home Minister V S Acharya approved the ideaand directed him to implement it at the earliest.
Happy with the response of the public for the four VMS - on Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road, Airport Road at Hebbal (two sign boards) and K R Puram (towards City), the traffic police have decided to introduce the facility on six more roads - Residency Road, Basaveshwar Circle, Richmond Road, JC Road (Minerva Circle), Kannada Bhavan and K G Road.
Erection work is on with the boards received from Spain. In all probability, the six will be functional by June end, Sood said.
The VMS on RRMR Road was extensively used to flash alerts about jams, slow traffic movement and alternative routes during IPL matches, BBMP elections and Eid processions. The alerts helped hundreds of road users to take alternative roads.
