The state government has issued an order on withdrawing ban on the conversions of land in Kodagu district.
The process of land conversion was stalled in the wake of incessant rain and natural disasters.
Following the ban on land conversions, members of the public could not convert the land for non-agricultural purposes, such as construction of houses. They had submitted a memorandum to the government in this regard. Considering their demand, the government has allowed the conversion of land now.
Revenue Minister R V Deshpande said that tahsildars and assistant commissioners can conduct spot inspection and can convert the land so as to facilitate the construction of the houses, restricted to 15 to 20 cents. However, there is no provision for the conversion of land in the areas identified as vulnerable to natural disasters, as per the report submitted by the Geological Survey of India (GSI).
Various other norms too have been mentioned in the report, for the construction of houses. The houses should not be constructed on slopes, valleys and therefore, the conversion of land will not be done at such places.
