Belagavi district, which won the State award for implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, has set another record. The zilla panchayat constructed 115 toilets in 24 hours under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

In a bid to make the district open defecation-free, the zilla panchayat, which is focusing on individual villages under the ‘Swachha Habba’ programme, took up the challenge of constructing 101 toilets in a day at Gajapati village in Badas Gram Panchayat in Belagavi taluk.

As part of their plan, 140 workers working round the clock from 6 am on Saturday till 6 am on Sunday, managed to construct 115 toilets, exceeding the target.

The villagers will be able to use the toilets as soon as the pipes are laid. Officials, staff and workers mobilised construction material, including cement slabs and ready pits. Then labourers, collectively working in different groups, realised their goal.

With this, Badas GP has broken its own record of 133 toilets constructed in a span of one week under the ‘Vara Ondu Souchalaya Nooru’ (One Week, Hundred Toilets) programme. While Gajapati village is now among villages where every house has a toilet, Badas has 301 toilets for 640 households and the rest of the toilets would be built by March-end, an official said.

Panchayat Development Officer Ashok Mirji hailed the efforts of the gram panchayat which took up the challenge of constructing 101 toilets in a day and built 14 more toilets, highlighting the support of the people in making their village open defecation free, he stated.
