Bengaluru: A 52-year-old man was murdered by his neighbour over a minor altercation in western Bengaluru on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Murthy, was a resident of Sonnenahalli.
Police have arrested Kirthi, 27, Murthy’s neighbour, in connection with the crime.
Investigations revealed that the incident occurred after Murthy accidentally stepped on Kirthi’s foot, sparking a fatal confrontation.
Investigators said Murthy and his relatives were having drinks at his brother’s house, along with neighbours, including Kirthi. The gathering took place on the eve of Pitru Paksha, a period in the Hindu calendar when homage is paid to ancestors.
At one point during the evening, Murthy stepped on Kirthi’s foot, leading to an argument. In a fit of rage, Kirthi used a knife to stab Murthy, the police said.
An officer also revealed that the two had quarrelled previously over a financial dispute.
"During questioning, the suspect admitted that he had purchased the knife online, but only to intimidate Murthy,” the officer stated. “However, the situation escalated as both were under the influence of alcohol.”
A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing, police confirmed.
