Bengaluru: An accident on the Bengaluru-Tumakuru highway claimed the life of an eight-month pregnant woman on Wednesday morning.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Sinchana, was a resident of Totanahalli near Billinakote.
Sinchana was riding pillion on her husband Manjunath’s motorcycle as they were returning from offering prayers at the Sri Shivagange temple. The accident occurred around 8 am outside a restaurant at Yedehalli Cross.
The Nelamangala traffic police said a speeding tipper lorry carrying jalli stones suddenly swerved to the left while attempting to avoid a KSRTC bus that was slowing down ahead.
The lorry collided with the two-wheeler, flinging both Sinchana and Manjunath off the bike.
A Nelamangala police officer explained: “It appears the lorry driver was traveling at a high speed and lost control when the brakes didn’t respond. Unfortunately, Sinchana fell to her right and the lorry’s back wheels ran over her, resulting in her death on the spot.
”Sinchana’s body was taken to the Nelamangala government hospital. Manjunath, 29, who fell to the left, sustained minor injuries.
The lorry driver, identified as 27-year-old Arun Kumar, has been arrested.
Time together
Sinchana was due to deliver later this month, completing nine months of pregnancy on August 17.
Speaking to reporters outside the hospital, Manjunath said, “Our company has another branch, and she suggested I work there to ease the sadness of being away from home.
“Today was our last day together, and I wanted to spend a moment with her at the temple before I was to catch the bus at 9.30 pm.”
“We were traveling slowly near a dhaba just after Yedehalli when the lorry driver came speeding and hit us.”
