Bengaluru: A Bangladeshi national staying illegally in Bengaluru for the last eight years was arrested by the police, officials said on Monday. The suspect is Ramzan Shaikh, 38, who worked in a garbage segregation unit with his second wife in the city.
The suspect managed to forge his birth certificate and concealed the fact that he was born in Bangladesh. The certificate showed that he was born in West Bengal. He was staying in Channasandra, police said.
Police found that he had also managed to get a fake Aadhar card voter ID and also possessed an Indian driving license. The police were alerted after Shaikh’s first wife in Bangladesh had lodged a missing person’s complaint. She had claimed that Shaikh left for India on a medical visa but never returned. He had married a local and settled down in Bengaluru, investigations revealed.
Shaikh was arrested in 2023 and was sent to the detention centre as he didn’t have a valid visa and passport. “He was out after taking permission from the court for a surgical procedure,” an officer said. After his release, he continued to live with his second wife. The Kadugodi police, who initiated the joint operation with Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) officials, booked the case under Section 336(3) (forgery), 340(2) (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine) and 339 (having possession of document knowing it to be forged and intending to use it as genuine) and relevant sections of the Foreigners’ Act.
