Bengaluru: Traffic on MG Road ground to halt on Saturday afternoon after a car driver crashed his vehicle over the median near Anil Kumble Circle while taking a U-turn towards the metro station.

Nobody was injured but the crash contributed to severe traffic for at least 45 minutes until the vehicle was towed away.

The crash occurred around 3 pm when Gaurav Singh, a 30-year old IT professional, was trying to take a U-turn towards the metro station in his Volkswagen Virtus (23 BH8608 B). “I was preoccupied with something and accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of slamming the brakes. Before I realised it, the car was over the median. I think the tyre burst as well," he said.

Cubbon Park traffic police, who arrived at the spot, noted that he had taken a U-turn despite it not being allowed. "It is unlikely that he was under the influence of alcohol when this happened," said an officer.

Gaurav was reportedly trying to get to his home on Rest House Road from his company in Dollars Colony, JP Nagar. He had moved from Kanpur to the city to work in an MNC about 6 months ago. The car was registered in Kanpur.

The towing vehicle got to the spot at 3.50 pm, whilst the road continued to see heavy traffic for over forty five minutes. Vehicles crawled towards Cubbon Park, stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic all the way from Tonique signal to the Bible Society of India building.
