This move will facilitate a unified agency on the lines of Land Transport Authority of Singapore or Metropolitan Transport Authority of New York, a long-pending demand of urban transportation planners and experts.
According to Mohammad Mohsin, Director, Department of Urban Land Transport (DULT) and member convener, BMLTA the draft act currently in place will soon be forwarded to the State cabinet for approval. “The Government of India has set a deadline of March 2010 for the State to legislate and accord legal status to the draft. A public meeting will be called for on February 20 to invite suggestions,” Mohsin said.
The Act empowers authority to issue directions to the internal stakeholders like BMRDA, BDA, BBMP, BMTC, BMRCL and any other government controlled agency engaged in or with the transport sector on matters relating to the land-based transport system development and other aspects.
