Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has used a major chunk of its JnNURM funds for laying underground drainage (UGD) work in the newly added BBMP areas of Yelahanka, Bytarayanapura, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Dasarahalli, KR Puram and Kengeri, as part of the Karnataka Municipal Reforms Project (KMRP).
The Board has managed to complete only 73 per cent of the project, which was allocated Rs 28,827.77 lakh. The toughest part has been in laying UGD lines in hitherto undeveloped areas.
Under JnNURM, BWSSB had also taken up augmentation of additional 100 million litres of water per day (MLD) supply from Cauvery IV stage I phase utilising Rs 16 crores. Cauvery IV stage I phase was initially planned to draw only 300 MLD of water, but was later upgraded as the pipelines had the capacity for another 100 MLD. The project was completed in 2008.
Another JnNURM project was installation of bulk flow meter in feeder lines in the City to check the amount of water drawn to certain areas. The system helpd curb pipeline leakages. The project with a cost of Rs 637.04 lakhs was completed in 2012. BWSSB has now proposed to install more bulk flow meters in new BBMP areas.
Replacement of the main sewage sub mains at the four major valleys of Hebbal, Vrishabhavathi, Koramangala and Chalaghatta was another project. Under the Environment Action Plan (EAP), the Board replaced huge sewage lines to avoid the waste water flow in storm water drains. This project, with a cost of Rs. 17,675 lakh, is expected to be completed in March 2014.
