Upalokayukta Justice S B Majage on Tuesday directed the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to stop the flow of sewage into the Allalasandra lake. Justice Majage told the BWSSB to divert the sewage at the earliest and to prevent the choking of the lake.

T Venkataraju, engineer-in-chief of the BWSSB, informed the Upalokayukta that the water board had floated tenders for Rs 58 lakh for sewage diversion works.

Water for industries

The sewage will be diverted to the treatment plant in Yelahanka. The treated water will be supplied to industries in the vicinity, he said.

Palike commissioner M Lakshminarayana, who accompanied Justice Majage, said an action plan for Rs 10 crore had been prepared to develop a park there.

Rs seven crore spent

Already Rs seven crore had been spent on fencing, developing walkway, planting trees and electrification. The rest of the amount would be spent on desilting and maintenance, once the sewage inflow is stopped, he said.

Spread over 44 acres, the Allalasandra lake is right in the middle of Yelahanka. The once-beautiful lake has turned into a cesspool.

Following a complaint from the residents, Justice Majage visited the lake and issued directions to the authorities to revive the water body.
