A car driver who knocked a software engineer unconscious lodged a police complaint against the victim, accusing him of crashing his bike into his vehicle and causing damage on September 3.
Parents of the techie, identified as 27-year-old Abhinandhan, had to visit the Avalahalli police station for four days to convince the officers that their son was the victim of an accident, and register an FIR.
Abhinandhan works for Cap-Gemini and is a native of Dharmavaram in Andhra Pradesh. He resides in BTM Layout. Spending the weekend at his hometown, Abhinandhan was returning to his office when the accident happened.
"I was riding on the highway when my phone vibrated. I entered the service lane and parked the bike in a corner to check the phone. After that, I decided to ride along the service lane," Abhinandhan told DH.
Riding on the second gear, he tried overtaking a car when another vehicle knocked him down from his right side. A crowd gathered as Abhinandhan lay unconscious. They called an ambulance and he was shifted to the Sathya Sai Hospital. "The helmet I wore actually saved my life," Abhinandhan said.
It was then that the car driver went to the police station and lodged a complaint against Abhinandhan. He got his car released, obtained a copy of the FIR and headed to the garage to repair the vehicle.
Learning about the incident, Abhinandhan's parents came to Bengaluru the following day and were shocked to learn that the police registered their son as the accused while he was actually the victim.
"I kept running from pillar to post for four days, urging the police to register our complaint, but they kept shooing us away saying an FIR against the bike rider was already registered and it has reached the court," said Abhinandhan's mother Rajeshwari.
They kept avoiding the parents, saying the senior officers were not available at the station. When Abhinandhan’s friends brought the matter before the superintendent of police, he instructed his subordinates to take their complaint as well.
A police inspector who visited the spot maintains that the car was going on the extreme left and Abhinandhan's bike hit another car while overtaking the vehicle. The police are still probing the case.
