It soaks sweat easily and gives comfort on a hot sunny day, such is the quality of linen fabric. Though expensive than regular cotton, this naturally organic fabric is not just comfortable it is classy too. The fabric’s popularity and versatility is such that recently Anavila Mishra showcased her collection of chequered linen sarees at the Lakme India Fashion Week in Mumbai.

And a fabric which is popular among men has to find a place in women’s wardrobe too! “Linen has a raw natural look and crushes easily, so it is difficult to create silhouettes with drapes and delicate folds. For this reason, traditionally it’s been used more for men’s clothing,” says designer Priyanka Gupta, who has her own fashion label Summer. The designer elaborates, “With constant innovation in fashion these days, and changing tastes, this is a tendency that is quickly changing.”

Casual and dressy, men prefer linen because “it is easy to carry and maintain. It can be used on formal occasions and outdoor weddings,” says Kiran Kheva, fashion director, Indian Federation For Fashion Development (IFFD). But she is quick to point out, “Linen is increasingly becoming women’s fabric as well because of the comfort it has.”

According to her, a linen blazer with a casual plain linen trouser is fast becoming modern corporate women’s favourite attire. “Linen dresses and sarees for a casual evening party are also very popular these days. Even traditional salwar suits, have a variety of styles and designsin linen, especially in summers,” says Kheva.

“The fabric is perfect for stunning business suits. Even linen skirts look wonderful for office goers. You can also pair a knee-length kurti with a loose trouser or salwar,” says designer Swati Narula.

But don’t go for layering in linen, caution experts. “It is not advisable. It is best used in interesting cuts and surface ornamentations,” says Gupta. While Narula is of the opinion that beauty of linen is its ability to blend well with other fabrics such as wool, cotton and silk. “One secret to layering in the warmer months is linen knitwear. Linen scarfs can also be layered with casual tops,” she says.

Play with accessories to enhance the charm of this naturally organic fabric which lends a unique character to the outfit. “Linen jackets, kaftans and dresses of all shades can be accessorised with metallic jewellery and silver as well. Men can always add a nice sling bag, duffle bag for a casual look with a plain linen suit as well. Even for an office look, one can add a black or blue leather laptop bag with white linen suit, or even a yellow one,” says Kheva.

But designer Jessica Khanuja says, “When it comes to accessories, I would suggest one to go for some quirky and colourful scarves to suit the attire in subtle shades of pastel. Go for a nice pair of earrings and statement necklace to give you a polished pretty look.”
