The Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh wedding in Italy on Thursday was a glittering affair, and it was largely shielded from the journalistic gaze.

The couple managed to keep the wedding private, even as social media sites were flooded with speculation about what the bride and the groom were wearing, how the venue was decked up, and who was turning up.

Such was the frenzy that hundreds of reporters waited outside the venue clamouring for a glimpse. They weren’t allowed in.

Many stars in the movie business say they struggle for privacy in situations such as this one.

Priyamani, leading lady in several south Indian hits, says, “A sacred ritual like marriage is just between the boy and the girl and their respective families. If they want to keep it private, they have all the right to do so.”

She argues media must stay away. “Forget they are celebrities for a second because at the end of the day, it’s the union of two families and they should be given their space,” she says.

Priyamani wanted to give out a press note announcing her wedding but her fiancé Mustafa Raj said nobody need know.

“We should be given space to enjoy our private and special moments, just like others,” she says.

Whenever the couple is ready to share news or pictures, they will definitely do so, she reasons.

Earlier, celebrity couples Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli and Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi took their fans by surprise by keeping their wedding celebrations hush-hush. They released wedding pictures after the rituals were done. Television actress Saumya Tandon also kept her wedding with Saurabh Devendra Singh low-key.

“Despite being public figures, we are human and as sensitive as anybody else. People definitely need to be more responsible and sensitive towards others’ personal lives,” she says.
