DG set and traffic major contributors of air pollution

The sectoral category study was conducted in 2007 by The Energy Research Institute (Teri) in association with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and peer-reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Environment and Forests only in 2011.

According to the report, the share of the transport sector to pollution increased from 19 per cent in (particulate matter) PM, 10 to 50 percent in PM 2.5, depicting finer size of the particles emitted from vehicles.

The contribution of DG sets was 13 percent and 25 percent in PM 10 and PM 2.5 respectively.

Industrial zones
The contribution of industries to particulate matter in the city was low, but was found to be higher in industrial zones.

The area of survey included traffic counts, parking lot surveys, household fuel consumption surveys, road dust monitoring, industrial surveys, survey of DG set usage and construction sites.
