Tension prevailed for sometime after a major fire broke out at an industrial unit in Kumbalgodu on Mysuru Road on Friday evening. Though no casualties were reported materials in the unit were reduced to ashes.
Gomiti Incinco, owned by one Sharma, has various units to destroy industrial hazardous wastes. Fire broke out around 3.30 pm at packing section due to short-circuit. There were around 10 employees, who rushed outside after the fire broke out. They tried to douse the fire, but failed.
They informed an industrial unit in the same area that had fire tender facility. Two private tenders were rushed to the spot, but it was insufficient, the company’s CEO Sharma told Deccan Herald.
Fire brigade alerted
Later, the workers alerted the fire brigade around 4.50 pm and eight fire tenders were pressed into service. However, the fire had engulfed the entire factory campus by the time tenders arrived. The fire was completely doused by 10 pm.
The building, spread over an acre of land, was constructed around 10 years ago and Sharma claimed that he had obtained permission from all agencies.
“I have followed all fire safety norms as per the National Building Code specifications. Gomiti Incinco handles two metric tonnes of industrial waste collected from various parts of the State,” he added. The loss is yet to be estimated. A case has been registered at the Kumbalgodu police station.
