In a recent study conducted by University of London, researchers have come to the conclusion that children growing up on fast food are likely to develop a lower Intelligence Quotient (IQ) in comparison to those who take freshly cooked meals.

The time is not far, when such research could also hold true for Indian kids who frequently binge on junk food.  Part of the problem could be resolved if we knew what ingredients can be added to the diet to enhance IQ levels of youngsters.

The initial step is to remember our Granny’s recipes and health-related discussions, especially when she used to lay stress on having dry fruits and green vegetables daily.

Almond is the staple when it comes to food for brain. It has been traditionally and scientifically proven that five almonds a day help sharpen memory and helps improve energy levels. According to established research, almonds contain proteins which are essential for energy function and help repair brain cells.

Similarly, walnuts too are essential for memory. “Walnuts, almonds and flex seeds are the best food items that can increase the intelligence quotient in a child. By IQ level it means that the brain remains active through the day instead of turning lethargic.

Having six to seven small meals a day can also be helpful. brown rice is more beneficial than white rice. One should also increase the intake of vegetables,” says City-based nutritionist Tapasya Mundhra.

According to Tapasya, brain can remain active only by increasing the consumption of Vitamin E and anti-oxidants. “Vitamin E is essential for promoting brain pituitary activity. In breakfast, you can have soaked nuts. As winter are about to come, add almonds and ‘Khus-Khus’ to your first meal.”

The nutritional content of the food we consume has a direct affect on concentration. It is important, therefore to have food which has a soothing effect on the nervous system and removes mental fatigue. Dried prunes are also said to be a great option when it comes to keeping the brain cool.

Vegetables are also an important in keeping the brain active. “Carrots, beetroots, coconuts, amla and leafy vegetables should be part of daily meals. These are rich sources of Vitamin A, B, C, calcium and potassium. Vitamins play an active role in renewal of blood cells and for maintenance of nervous cells,” informs Tapasya.
