Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said the State government will consider providing midday meals to students, teaching and non-teaching staff of all government colleges in the State at affordable prices.
“The State government is committed towards making the State free from hunger. Students going to government schools and colleges should not suffer from malnutrition.
We will take steps accordingly and consider introducing midday meals for teaching, non-teaching staff and students of government colleges in Karnataka,” he said on the sidelines of the inauguration of ‘Suvarna Mahotsava’ celebration held at Government Women Polytechnic College, Seshadri Road here.
Siddaramaiah’s remarks came in the wake Shivajinagar MLA R Roshan Baig’s suggestion on providing midday meals to government colleges.
“The students should be charged Rs 5, Rs 10 for non-teaching staff and Rs 20 for teaching staff for each mid-day meal plate in all government colleges,” Baig said.
‘Ksheera Bhagya’
The chief minister noted that under the government's Ksheera Bhagya scheme, a total of around one crore four lakh children are getting benefitted out of which 30 lakh are from Anganwadi Centres.
“Every person should get education irrespective of caste or creed," he added.
“The government will also think about increasing the number of hostels in all government colleges.” Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande said implementation of Edusat programme is in progress in all government degree and polytechnic colleges.
On the Sowjanya rape and murder case, Siddaramaiah said Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry is currently going on.
“Once final report is submitted, we will consider handing over the case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).”
