Swift action by the Girinagar police inspector and his team saved the life of a 39-year-old woman school teacher in Hoskerehalli on Thursday.
The cop went beyond the call of duty to even donate the rare AB+ blood group to save her life.
The incident unfolded near the Eashwari Primary and Middle school at Venkatapa Layout in Hoskerehalli when the teacher, Tanuja, was walking home after school. Tanuja also offered private tuition for many children.
A man in his late 40s whom police identified as Shekar lay waiting for the teacher near the school with a newly bought machete. When Tanuja reached Venkatappa Layout, Shekar hacked her with the machete and sliced her fingers when she tried to defend herself. A deep cut to her flank left Tanuja bleeding profusely.
Meanwhile, two men riding by in a bike informed Girinagar inspector CA Siddalingaiah about the woman being hacked nearby.
Siddalingaiah and his team abandoned their inspection of the election booths near Hoskerehalli and rushed to Tanuja’s help.
The inspector covered her wounds using her sari and took her to the AV Memorial Hospital in an autorickshaw.
After giving her first aid, the doctors advice police to move her to a bigger hospital since her wounds were serious. Siddalingaiah then dialled the 108 ambulance and shifted Tanuja to Victoria Hospital. “That was the Golden Hour and we ensured the patient reached the hospital without delay,” Siddalingaiah told DH.
Tanuja was wheeled into the operation theater, where doctors asked for the rare AB+ blood. Realising that the patient’s blood type matched his own, the inspector immediately offered one unit of blood which was infused into Tanuja during the operation.
The doctors who saved Tanuja’s life at the right time thanked the police for their swift action. Tanuja is out of danger and is recuperating, Siddalingaiah said.
A sub-inspector arrested Shekar who confessed that he bought a new machete to kill Tanuja.
Shekar’s two children were taking private tuition from Tanuja. He recently learnt that Tanuja, whose husband is dead, was getting closer to a male friend. Resenting their friendship, Shekar decided to kill the teacher.
Police took up a case of attempt to murder, arrested Shekar and produced him before a magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody.
