The Urban Development and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) which are struggling to supply quality drinking water to its consumers, is now waking up to the fact that the two of the crucial legislations concerning ground water has not been implemented.

Urban Development and BWSSB Minister S Suresh Kumar on Friday wrote to Chief Secretary S V Ranganath asking him to instruct the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department to implement the two crucial Ground Water Acts.

Kumar has stated that the Karnataka Ground Water (Regulation for protection of sources of Drinking Water) Act, 1999 and 2010, and the Karnataka Ground Water (Regulation and Control of Development and Management) Act, 2011, are not being implemented by the RD&PR department, which has led to depletion of ground water levels.

“The department has neither framed rules, nor has it begun to implement the Acts. The ground water level is fast depleting every year, and citizens are facing shortage of water. It is necessary to prohibit over exploitation of ground water. I request you to instruct the department to give effect to the provisions of the enactments,” he adds.
