Thousands of people across the city were seen thronging jewellery shops on the occasion of 'Akshaya Tritiya' on Wednesday. It is believed that materials of higher value bought on Akshaya Tritiya day would bring unending prosperity.
Despite shop owners making elaborate arrangement for smooth conduct of business, they struggled to manage the swelling crowd with fewer employees.
In order to make things simple, Joyalukkas jewellery shop on MG Road, which had four floors, had brought down all its operations to the ground, saving customers the arduous climbs up and down the building.
"This time around, customers prefer lightweight jewels with antique designs. Earlier, they used to buy modern designs since we didn't have antique designs on lightweight jewels," said Jiji K Mathew, marketing manager, Joyalukkas, MG Road.
Lalita Nutakki, a customer from Yeshwantpur, admits to having jewellery buying as a custom on 'Akshaya Tritiya'. "Yes, I prefer buying some jewellery on this day," she said.
Sumitra, a resident of Indiranagar, said: "It is believed that whatever we buy on this day will be very auspicious and (make us) prosperous. So, I buy gold on this day, despite what people talk about it."
Gautam Chand, the owner of Navrathan Jewellers, hailed 'Akshaya Tritiya' as a very big day in terms of sales. "We do 10 days worth of business on a single day. Most people give prior orders for designed jewels and they collect it on this day," Chand said.
Venkatesh Babu, the chairman of the Bangalore Jewellers Association, said sales went beyond expectations.
