With summer here, styling the hair has become a fashion concern. While many prefer to go really short during this season, others like to experiment with the length and colouring. Hair experts talk to ‘Metrolife’ about the trends of the season.
The traditional bob and blunt hairstyles are most popular, says Jack from Naturals Unisex Salon And Spa, Jayanagar. “Since it is really hot, people are opting for short styles to keeps the heat away. People who are not opting for haircuts are also looking into stylish head buns,” says Jack. He adds that colouring of the hair is a style requisite during summer.
“People often go wild with colours. The best colours for Indians for summer is red, copper and bronze streaks. When it is done as a part of a short hairstyle like a bob cut, it must be added in the front,” he says. Jack adds that other hairstyles like the razor cut and layer cuts are quite popular.
Many are going for the undercut hairstyle that Rihanna had sported.“There are many who are asking for the bob cut with an undercut which makes the haircut trendy. It also gives a an airy and light feeling. Others, who don’t want to chop their hair, are going with a proper trim and playing around with fringes. The trim keeps the hair healthy and experimenting with fringes, makes one look ready for the bright season,” says Alice Li, a beautician.
Alice adds that the pixie hair cut which Jennifer Lawrence has, is also a common choice among youngsters. “The undercut can also be added to this style,” she says.
Haircuts of the season are often adaptations of the trends from the last season, says Naina Gunjikar, a stylist with High Gloss, Lavelle Road. “Trends change every season. This summer, undercuts are the way to go. One with long or short hair can go for this look where the hair underneath is shaved off. This gives an edgy look. Hair patterns can also be added to this,” says Naina. She adds that more people are sporting the ‘lob’ or the ‘long bob’.
“It is longer in the back. There are people who are going for sharp long bob cuts too, which are shorter in the back and longer in front. This just hits the shoulder and covers the back of the neck,” she says.
Naina adds that the middle parting of hair has come back in style.“As much as this might remind one of one’s school days, this style highlights one’s features. The ‘harsh middle parting’ goes well with a longer and hippie hairstyle.”
When it comes to hair colours, she says that though the last season was “about being dramatic”, this time is about being subtle. “Hair colouring gets very popular during the summer season. This summer is more about the ‘balayage’, which looks like it has faded naturally,’ says Naina.
Summer hair cuts like the disconnected layer hair cut and the round layer cut, are other choices this year, says Bhaskar Gurung, a stylist with Kayla Spa N Salon, New BEL Road. “People come asking for other variations of the bob cut like the graduated bob cut,” he says.
There are many who are not ready to experiment and still opt for the short and long layer cuts. “This is because one’s hair looks fuller, when cut into layers,” says Bharathi M Rathnam from Kimaya Unisex Salon, Basaveshwaranagar. Apart from the regular bob haircut, the mushroom haircut is a rage among the youth.
“Advanced haircuts like the graduated cut and reverse cut — styles where the layers are cut differently, are also in demand,” she says. Asymmetric blunt cuts and layered blunt haircut are also a popular choice.
“If the customer has a broad forehead, then front flicks would be a good idea.” While the undercut is a popular choice, Bharathi says that streaks in ‘honey gold’ and ‘golden blonde’ colours are in this season.
