An old dilapidated bridge on a stormwater drain connecting the slum dwellers near ISRO colony to Cambridge Layout collapsed on Tuesday while Shantinagar MLA NA Harris was campaigning in the constituency.

The BBMP officials on Wednesday constructed a temporary bridge. Bettegowda, chief engineer, stormwater drain said: “We have laid iron girdlers and made a makeshift pathway.”

On Tuesday, as hundreds of Congress workers had gathered, the metal bridge could not hold the weight of the people and it collapsed. This affected about 150 families (400 people) living on the other side of the slum.

Renuka Vishwanathan, Aam Aadmi Party candidate from the constituency said: “I heard about the collapse when I was campaigning in the constituency and reached out to the people there. When we informed BBMP commissioner M Maheshwar Rao, he deployed BBMP special commissioner Vijay Shankar to look into the matter and they started the work immediately.”
