A 33-year-old  woman from Mumbai is  battling for life after  a 36-year-old man from the city reportedly stabbed her for saying no to his marriage proposal.

Kavita Agarwal, of Chembur, Mumbai, decided to remarry as her husband,  Lalit Agarwal, had died two years ago. She has two daughters  - aged 7 and 14  - who live with her in Mumbai.  Kavita uploaded her profile on a matrimonial website and got in touch with Lohith, a resident of  Parvathipuram near Chamarajpet. He evinced interest in marrying her. After talking to him on phone for some time, Kavita decided to meet him in person. Accordingly, she arrived in Bengaluru on  October 19.

During her visit, Kavita did a bit of investigation and  learnt that Lohith lives with his mother and that he is jobless. His neighbours apparently  spoke  of him in unflattering words, saying his wife had deserted him. Kavita decided not to marry him and booked a return ticket to Mumbai.

On Friday, while Kavita was  packing her bags, Lohith threatened to kill her if she refused to marry him. He took out  a knife and tried to stab her in the abdomen. Kavita dodged it but ended  up  injuring her right hand. Lohith then  stabbed  her in the right ear, left  chin and left shoulder. His mother rushed to Kavita's rescue and took her to the Victoria Hospital.
