As the deadline of August 15 to set up Indira Canteens is nearing, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is working on making the facilities ready before August 1.
On Friday, Mayor G Padmavathi, along with corporators and Palike officers, visited Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu where a multinational company, KEF Infrastructure, is fabricating the canteens at its offsite manufacturing facility.
The Palike is building these canteens in each of the 198 wards. These precast materials will be brought to Bengaluru and assembled at the designated places.
The mayor told reporters that the canteens will be ready before the deadline as the pace of work was satisfactory.
She said that though the precast material is light, it is strong enough to last more than 100 years.
According to Palike sources, the firm agreed to build these structures at a cost of Rs 28.5 lakh each against Rs 34 lakh quoted earlier. The manufacturer displayed a fully furnished model canteen at its site.
Company executives made a power-point presentation showing how they constructed a 12-storeyed corporate hospital in a very short time span. They also claimed that these precast structures are stronger and more durable than conventional buildings.
