‘Mysterious Hues’

‘The World...’The National Gallery of Modern Art, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and Archaeological Survey of India, is hosting an exhibition titled ‘The World of Rock Art’ at NGMA, Manikyavelu Mansion, No. 49 Palace Road till January 3 from 10 am to 5 pm.   

‘Symphony’ ‘Symphony’, an exhibition by Thota Tharrani, will be held at the Sublime Galleria till January 13 from 11 am to 8 pm.

‘From organic....’ The NGMA, in collaboration with the Balassi Institute — Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre, is holding an exhibition titled ‘From organic forms to light heart — Selection from the contemporary Hungarian art’ at its premises. The exhibition will be on view till January 12.

Live show 

‘Alive India in Concert’ presents a music concert by Monali Thakur and Clinton Cerejo on January 4, 6.30 pm at The Courtyard, Phoenix Marketcity, Mahadevapura, Whitefield Road. Monali Thakur is a popular Bollywood singer and also plays the lead role in Nagesh Kuknoor’s 

Lakshmi. Clinton Cerejo is a well-known playback singer, music composer and producer.

Counter Culture presents ‘Mad Orange Fireworks’ on January 4, 9 pm onwards. ‘Mad Orange Fireworks’ is a Bangalore-based rock band featuring Michael Dias on vocals and guitars, Kaushik Kumar on bass and vocals and Deepak Raghu on drums. For details, call 41400793. 

Battle time Bangalore Karaoke Championship (BKC) will be held on January 5, 5 pm at the Alliance Francaise. The 14 finalists chosen from the auditions for corporates, karaoke clubs and individuals will be taking the centre stage for the last time this season. The champion will get a chance to record his/her own album at the Soundglitz Studio. 

Sankranthi treatSri Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira is presenting, ‘Sankranthi Music Festival’ till January 9, 5.45 pm everyday. The venue is Sri Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira Concert Hall, 9th Main Road, Banashankari, 2nd Stage. 

The programme will feature performances by Prof K Saraswathi Vidyardhi on vocals and Baluraghuraman on the violin on January 2;Mavaleekara P Subramaniam on vocals, Trivandrum N Sampath on the violin, Palakkadu Mahesh Kumar on mridangam and Udupi Sridhar on ghatam on January 3 and Ashwin Anand on the veena, K U Jayachandra Rao on the mridangam and Dayananda Mohite on ghatam on January 4. The other performances in the festival include shows by vocalist Dr Baby Sreeram, N N Ganesh Kumar on the violin, BR Srinivas on the mridangam and G Omkar Rao on the ghatam on January 5. 

B Shivakumar on the veena, along with Anoor Anantha Krishna Sharma on the mridangam and Sukanya Ramgopal on the ghatam, will be performing on January 6 and January 7. It will have performances by vocalist G Srikanth accompanied by R Raghul on the violin, Prof V Krishna on the mridangam and G Guruprasanna on the khanjari. The concert on January 8 will have vocalist K Bhargavi with Vedula Srikiran on the violin and Akshay Anand on the mridangam. 

Violinist Anuradha Sridhar, accompanied by H S Sudheendra on the mridangam and S N Narayanamurthy on the ghatam, will perform on January 9. For details, call 7760907939.

Vocal concertMA Narasimhachar Music Foundation is presenting a grand vocal concert on January 7, 6 pm at The Indian Institute of World Culture, B P Wadia Road. The concert will feature Anushree Puttur accompanied by B K Raghu on violin and ASN Swamy on mridangam. 

Old songs

The eighth show of Gaata Rahe Mera Dil will be held on January 4, 6.30 pm at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall under the theme of Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
 The songs that will be sung include those from the 1960s and 70s. Some songs of the 80s will be performed as well.  For details, call 26578926. 

Instrumental strains 

The ‘Karnataka Sangeetha Classical Instrumental Music Concert’ will be held on January 4, 5.30 pm onwards at Snea Bhavan (JTO Hall), 13th Main, 20th Cross, near Balamuri Ganapathi Temple and Allahabad Bank, Sahakarnagar. 

Among the musicians who will perform are Varijashree Venugopal on the flute, J K Sridhar on the violin, C Cheluvaraj on the mridangam and C P Vyasa Vittala on the khanjira.    

DRAMA

Comical tribute 

Evam is celebrating its tenth year by paying a tribute to the 100 years of Indian cinema.

Bollywood Kee Maa, a comical tribute to the Indian cinema, will be staged on January 4, 4 pm and 8 pm, at the Alliance Francaise.

The play brings out the many facets of Bollywood movies while five actors give a twist to the evergreen Bollywood tales with a hilarious take on the cliches used over the years. 

The play is directed by Gavin Robertson from the UK. 

Evam is also staging its new stand-up tamasha called ‘Donkey Dies, Father Cries’ at Alliance Francaise on January 3, 8 pm. 

It stars S Aravind, Naveen Richard, Karthik Kumar and Bala Kumaran.

‘The Clean...’ 

Sarah Ruhl’s ‘The Clean House’, a comedy with a hint of madness, will be staged on January 10 (8 pm), 11 (8 pm) and January 12 (3 pm and 8 pm) at Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield. The play was a 2005-Pulitzer Prize finalist. It won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2004 and is directed by Tulika Majumdar. The light and sound are by Gautam Raja and Imran Ahmed respectively. The actors include Shraddha Srinath, Mohan Ram, Ruchi Raveendran, Tulika Majumdar and 

Roli Arun. 

POT POURRI 

‘Toto Festival’

Toto Funds the Arts, in association with Alliance Francaise, presents ‘The Toto Festival’ on January 10 and 11. There will be presentations, panel discussions, readings, screenings, literary quiz, sessions on photography, creative writing (English), creative writing (Kannada) and short films, apart from a contemporary music concert. The sessions during the day will cover recent works by the past recipients of the Toto Awards and other young writers, photographers and film-makers. A music concert will be held on January 10, 6.30 pm and the award function will take place on January 11, 6.30 pm. Entry is free. 

Film screening  

There will be a screening of ‘Fire in the Blood’ on January 12, 6 pm at Alliance Francaise. The film is an intricate tale of medicine, monopoly and malice. Shot in four continents, it features Bill Clinton and Desmond Tutu. Entry is free. 

‘The Tickle...’  

Comedian Praveen Kumar presents ‘The Tickle Minded’ on January 4, 8 pm at the Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield. The stand-up comedy is a journey of Praveen’s life and his observations of India. The opening act is by Ahmed Sheriff. 

Documentary 

Bangalore International Centre presents the screening of a documentary film titled ‘The Unseen Sequence’, which explores bharatanatyam, on January 10, 6 pm at Bangalore International Centre Auditorium, Teri complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage. The film deliberates the valuable connections and departures that Malavika Sarukkai makes from a hallowed and often, unforgiving tradition. For details, call 9886599675.

Dance recital 

Indian Council for Cultural Relations is presenting a bharatanatyam dance recital by Ishwarya Thirunarayanan on January 3, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Center, Nrupathunga Road.

The programme is a part of the ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’. 

‘Kuchipudi Natya’ 

The Indian Institute of World Culture is organising Kuchipudi Natya by Avijit Das on January 3 at 6 pm.

The venue is No 6, B P Wadia Road, Basavanagudi. 

The programme is being held as part of the ‘Dharmaprakasha L S Venkaji Rao Memorial Endowment Programme’.  

Bharatanatyam
