If the findings of Asian Consensus Meeting on Metabolic Surgery (ACMOMS) conference are anything to go by, out of the 1,400 surgeries done last year, 942 were women.
In fact, India topped the chart with 800 surgeries with women constituting 67 per cent. The conference held on Tuesday was attended by 23 leading Asian metabolic surgeons to discuss about the latest developments in metabolic surgery.
Interestingly, all agreed that Lap Sleeve Gastrectomy was the most preferred surgical treatment for obesity.
This surgery is performed as the first stage of a bariatric procedure in super-obese person. According to Dr Mufazzal Lakdawala, founder of ACMOMS, the method was popular with senior citizens and the recurrence rate of weight gain was as low as 2.7 per cent. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) points out that states like Punjab, Kerala, Goa and Tamil Nadu rank high on the obesity list.
