The Volkswagen sedan (TN 37 DH 9484) had four passengers — Mithun Chakravarthy (29), S Shabareesh (29), Shankar Ram (29) and Anushree (23). They were all friends who worked in the IT sector, according to the Yeshwantpur traffic police.

Mithun, the car driver, and Shabareesh had travelled from Coimbatore to meet their friends who lived in Mallehwaram, a traffic police officer said.

The crash occurred around 3.45 am at a near-90° accident-prone turn on top of the flyover towards Tumakuru. Police noted that the car rammed into the median, collided head-on with a biker named Manjunath (38) on the opposite lane, before plunging over the crash barrier and onto the road below.

The impact completely crushed the car’s bonnet. The car’s passengers sustained major injuries and were taken to Manipal Hospitals, Yeshwantpur. According to the police, Anushree sustained injuries to her head and face, but fell out of the car before it fell over. Manjunath sustained minor injuries.

Dr Firozahmad H Torgal, Chief Consultant (Emergency Medicine) at the hospital, noted that Shabareesh was brought dead. Without naming the other three patients, he said: “Two of them sustained traumatic brain injuries and the third patient had chest injuries and blood accumulating around the lungs. All the three are critically injured and will need to be in the ICU for the next 48 to 72 hours.”

An officer from the Yeshwantpur traffic police station said that an empty glass bottle was found in the car, but they were yet to ascertain if the driver consumed alcohol.

Siri Gowri, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic, North), said, “Mithun and Shabareesh had come to Bengaluru to collect their visas. They had purchased items for their international travel from Orion Mall at night. We suspect they might have partied after that. We have requested an alcohol test report.”
