More than 800 employees of the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport (BMTC) haven’t turned up for work for more than three months now. The corporation has vowed to take action against some of them.
In a statement, the BMTC said that most of its 26,319 crew were reporting for work but 802 employees had been absent for long even though the transporter had scaled up the bus services to meet the passenger demands.
In a related office note, the BMTC said that it was looking into the cases of employees not reporting for work for more than 90 days. In view of the pandemic, the corporation had decided not to take action on some of the employees.
Noting that “there is a need to care for the employees and to build confidence”, the BMTC said that cases against employees who were long absent between March 23, 2020, and October 1, 2020, would be resolved without taking disciplinary action.
However, the relaxation would not apply to the cases dating before March and after October last year.
