Parking fees in City set to increase

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to implement the Directorate of Urban Land Transport’s (DULT) recommendations on parking fees in the City.

The DULT had proposed an exorbitant price for parking in premium locations and the central business district. It had categorised the parking zones into three packages — A, B and C.

Package A is meant for premium parking, package B for business areas and package C for others. In package A, the charge for four-wheelers is Rs 30 per hour and two-wheelers Rs 15. In package B, the DULT recommended Rs 20 per hour for four-wheelers and Rs 10 for two-wheelers. In Package C, four-wheelers will be charged Rs 15 per hour, while two-wheelers will be charged Rs 5.

The DULT also suggested that half the amount be charged if vehicles are parked for half an hour. Only bicycles will be exempted from paying any fee.

Mayor B S Sathyanarayana said the topic would be discussed on September 28.
“We want these recommendations to be implemented in view of the growing vehicle population and shrinking parking space in the City,” he said.

The DULT had also suggested charging one and a half times the parking fee for mini buses and school vans. There is no scope for parking trucks and heavy transport vehicles.

For revising the parking fee based on wholesale price index (WSPI), a standard formula has been worked out. The equation is: New parking rate = old parking rate x (1+WSPI).

A parking fee meter has also been recommended. The meter will be equipped to accept payments through swipe cards, mobile applications and RFID. A centralised parking monitoring system will also be in place for checking availability of on-street and off-street parking facility.

Every road will have digital display boards showing the availability of parking space on a particular stretch. Multi-purpose surveillance cameras will be used for monitoring.

The BBMP aims to generate at least Rs 80 crore from parking fee. It also hopes to discourage people from using private vehicles and resort to public transport instead.
The DULT recommendations state that these facilities can be operated on a revenue-sharing arrangement, for which tenders for five years may be invited. The parking system will be fully automatic, with no room for tampering.

The DULT has also recommended that the system be called “Bangalore Initiative for Parking.”
