The patient, Vijaykumar, was being taken to Bengaluru from Hosadurga, when the incident happened on Monday at 11.45 pm.

As the ambulance approached the Bommanahalli mini forest near Nelamangala, the driver attempted to overtake a truck moving ahead of him, but instead crashed into it. “While the driver suffered multiple injuries, Vijaykumar died on the spot," an investigating officer told DH

The truck driver continued driving and fled the spot, the officer added.

Vijaykumar had a medical emergency late Monday evening and his family was rushing him to the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for cancer for several years.

A case has been registered at the Nelamangala traffic police station under IPC Section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304A (causing death by negligence), and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
