The State government has directed the Palike to ensure that tankers supplying drinking water are strictly monitored by the authorities in order to curb water mafia.

After a meeting with the officials of BWSSB, Transport, Mines and Geology and Minor Irrigation Departments on Friday, Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar told reporters that details such as the quantity of water being carried and the price should be displayed on the water tankers.

They will have to obtain periodic certificates from either the 10 government labs or other private labs in the City. The food inspectors of the Health department will monitor the process, while the Palike will be the regulating authority, he said. The tankers should also obtain the trade licence and specify the source of the drinking water.

Kumar said the Karnataka Ground Water Authority has also been directed to hold a meeting at 3 pm on Saturday.
