A suspended police officer from Tamil Nadu kicked and thrashed his 25-year-old daughter in full public view on a busy road near Ulsoor Circle on Thursday afternoon.
Two girls, who were passing through the stretch in their car, rushed to the spot and rescued the girl. Sometime later, the local police arrived and took the man, his wife and the victim to the police station for questioning.
Raja Ram was said to be beating his daughter after suspecting her of having an affair. The victim’s mother, a teacher in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, stood a mute spectator, witnessing the attack on her daughter who works in Bengaluru, said sources.
Ram was suspended from service two months ago. He was furious after he was told that his daughter was seen talking to a boy on the phone. He rushed to Bengaluru to teach her a lesson and take her back to Madurai, said sources in the police department.
“Two girls noticed Ram beating his daughter. The incident was watched by some 30 people, but none of them tried to rescue her. I had to contact the Madurai police and get in touch with the police commissioner there. I was told that Ram was a special sub-inspector and was suspended two months ago,” Waseem, an eye-witness, told Deccan Herald.
Ram sat on the bonnet of the car belonging to the two girls who rescued his daughter till the Ulsoor police arrived, he said.
When contacted, the Ulsoor police inspector confirmed the incident and said no complaint had been filed in connection with the incident. It was a fight between a man and his daughter. They arrived at a compromise and refused to lodge a complaint,” said the inspector.
