The "Safe Routes to School" project, which was initiated by Bangalore traffic police in 2005, at present covers 16 schools, Additional Commissioner of Police Traffic Abdul Saleem told reporters here today.

On the Action Taken Report on the suggestions given by traffic experts in a Citizen Forum meeting held last month, he said, in order to achieve greater compliance to traffic rules and regulations, traffic police has initiated stringent action against repeated violations of traffic rules by impounding the licences of such offenders and sending them to respective courts and RTOs for cancellation/suspension.

"During the last 10 days, already 265 driving licences have been sent for suspension", Saleem said.

Stringent action has also been initiated against younsters involved in drag racing and wheeling. Regular FIRs under section 279 of the IPC have been booked against them and their driving licences have been seized for suspenstion. This menace has come down significantly since last one month.

For the safety of the general public, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation have been directed 122 bus stops which are located in close proximity of traffic intersections.

The measures taken include suspending the driving licence of those driving on footpaths, removal of footpath parking, regulation of parking and educating road users on road safety.
