She was the pioneer in nightclub singing in 1969 and is the first Indian international recording artist. Usha Uthup aka ‘didi’ for her fans, is a performer and entertainer to the core.
Known for singing in 17 Indian languages and eight foreign languages, Usha’s deep voice, and her undying enthusiasm on stage has had many fall in love with her personality.
The Padma Shri awardee, who was in the city to perform at Phoenix MarketCity for their event ‘Rewind 2018’, spoke to Surupasree Sarmmah about her immense love for the audience in Bengaluru and more.
What do you think of the music scene in Bengaluru?
It is marvellous. The audience here really know their music and are informed. Bengalureans are amazing, at least to me, they have been fantastic. Whenever I have come here, whether it is for a corporate show, public event or private function, I see a very cosmopolitan crowd. I still believe that Bengaluru is a small town big city.
It has been almost five decades for you in the industry. How has this journey been?
There were a lot of ups and downs. I never talk about the downs (smiles). This makes me a compulsive optimist. My journey has been wonderful. If you make time your friend and learn to walk with time, I think there is no fight. The minute you start fighting with time, trying to be someone who you are not, then the journey becomes very difficult.
How do you perceive the changes that came your way?
The change has been more cosmetic and this kind of change is never difficult to deal with. My audience has been the same everywhere and it feels great to see their love for me, for what I do.
What is your advice for young and aspiring singers?
Hang in there and believe in yourself. You need to work with 100 per cent honesty on stage. If you have a dream, just follow it and work towards it. Don’t give up. Be dedicated and loyal and never underestimate your willpower.
