Deputy Chief Minister R Ashoka laid the foundation stone for an integrated plant for garbage segregation and generating power from biogas, as part of efforts to address the garbage menace, in the City on Monday.
The project will come up on the vacant site near the NMKRV College at a cost of Rs three crore.
Yediyur corporator N R Ramesh said in four months time, the entire Padmanabhanagar Assembly Constituency, which includes eight wards (Yediyur, Karesandra, Ganesh Mandir, Banashankari Temple, Hosakerehalli, Chikkalsandra, Padmanabhanagar and Kumaraswamy Layout) will not send any garbage to landfills.
“The constituency, on an average, generates 30 tonnes of wet waste every day. This waste will be utilised in the biogas plant, the dry waste will be sent to various private agencies. This way, we can save Rs 91 lakh which is being spent on transportation of garbage to the landfills,” he said.
He said the plant would have a segregation machine with a capacity of 50 tonnes, along with a German technology equipment to convert biogas into power.
Nearly one mega watt of power is expected to be generated. The power will light up seven parks, the Yediyur lake, a community hall, a BBMP office and a health centre. Ramesh said money would be spent only on door-to-door collection of garbage, after the plant becomes operational.
