A release issued here by BIAL said the design and layout of the expansion of existing Terminal 1 was finalised by the BIAL board and work on expansion will commence in September this year.
“When completed, Terminal 1 will be expanded by 70 per cent of the existing building with an additional passenger space of 40,000 square meters. This addition, will take the terminal capacity to 17 million passengers per annum, a requirement that will suffice till the year 2015,” the release said.
To be completed within 18 months from the commencement of its construction, the Terminal 1 extension will sport an enhanced and modern design elevation. The project has been designed by global architectural firm HOK. The construction partners for the project will be selected through a competitive bidding. The cost of this expansion is estimated to be around Rs 600 crore, according to BIAL.
In addition, a completely new landscaping concept will take shape, beginning from the Trumpet Interchange on NH-7, leading all the way up to the terminal building. “The renewed landscaping is aimed to reflect the flora of the city giving passengers and visitors an essence of Bangalore City at the airport itself,” added the release.
The Board meeting also announced the appointment of G V Krishna Reddy as the vice chairman of the BIAL Board and G V Sanjay Reddy as the company’s new managing director.
G V Krishna Reddy is also chairman of GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd (GVKPIL), while Sanjay Reddy is vice chairman, GVKPIL and also holds the position of managing director, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL). He will now, spearhead BIAL’s expansion phase that has been put on fast track. However, Marcel Hungerbuehler, CEO of BIAL, will remain responsible for the day-to-day operation of the airport.
