Accusing the state government and district administration of failing to solve the sand crisis, district BJP unit staged a protest in front of DC’s office on Saturday.
The protest was staged by the BJP in all the Assembly constituencies in the district.
Addressing the protesters in Mangaluru on Saturday, MLA D Vedavyas Kamath said, “Non-availability of sand has inconvenienced the public. The labourers are jobless. The district administration is dilly-dallying over the issue of permits for sand extraction. The state government has failed to understand the woes of middle and lower-middle-class people. In spite of the chief minister promising to solve the sand crisis by October 15, no action had been initiated by the district administration, so far.”
He demanded permanent solution for the sand crisis in the district by announcing a sand policy to allow traditional sand extraction. Due to non-availability of sand, the sand is sold at high prices.
BJP district vice-president Ravishankar Mijar accused the government playing politics on the sand issue.
The agitating BJP workers sang Bhajans, and MLA Vedavyas Kamath accompanied them on Tabla.
