Over the last one decade, Bangalore has added 27.24 lakh to its population clocking one of the highest decadal growth rate among metros in the country.

As per the latest paper on Census of India 2011 (Urban agglomeration and cities provisional population totals) released recently, the total population of Bangalore Urban Agglomeration (UA) stands at 84.99 lakh.

Urban Agglomeration includes the population of BBMP and its adjoining outgrowths like university campuses and railway colonies, according to the Census authority.

More men

There are more men in BBMP limits (44.01 lakh) than women (40.24 lakh). The effective literacy rate is 89.59 pc (male: 92.63 pc; female: 86.25 pc).

Incidently, Bangalore is the only city from Karnataka with a population of more than 10 lakh (one million).

Hubli- Dharwad city corporation is close to cross this mark at 9.43 lakh, but not as yet.
Bangalore continues to be the fifth most populated city in the country after Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.

Neighbouring states have more million plus population cities than Karnataka. While Kerala has seven such cities  - Kochi, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur and Kollam, Tamil Nadu has four cities with one million plus population - Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli. Andhra Pradesh has three cities -Hyderabad, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and Vijayawada-  with one million plus population.

The largest urban agglomeration in the country is Greater Mumbai (1.84 crore), followed by Delhi UA (1.64 crore). Kolkata UA which held the second rank in 2001 has been replaced by Delhi. In all, there are 53 cities in the country with a population of more than ten lakh.

Coming back to Karnataka, the state has two new class one cities as per the 2011 census. Bagalkot and Ranebennur have crossed the one lakh population mark and are now categorised as class one urban agglomerations. The state had 24 such agglomerations in 2001. Across the country there were 394 class one cities during 2011 census and the number has now gone to 468.
