A part of bridge-cum-barrage constructed across the Malaprabha river, between Sangolli village in Bailhongal taluk; and Bevinkoppa village in Kittur taluk got washed away by strong currents on Tuesday.
The river is in full flow as a consequence of heavy rains in Belagavi district. What remains of the barrage, is likely to get washed away subsequently, following increased inflow of water into the river.
Work on the bridge-cum-barrage was completed barely 18 months ago. But they were of sub-standard quality. So, the bridge could not withstand the onslaught of the rapid currents.
Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) Bailhongal subdivision implemented the works.
Catchment areas of river Malaprabha received heavy rains on Saturday night and Sunday also. This led to a rise in the water levels in the river. The new bridge-cum-barrage could not bear the pressure of the water.
Officials of KNNL were not available for comment.
