To bring back the glory of famed Udupi saree, a campaign titled ‘Save Udupi saree” will be organised, said Prasanna Heggodu of Charaka.

Speaking to reporters here, on Monday, he said in the past hundreds of weavers were engaged in weaving Udupi sarees.

“Over a period of time, several weavers have deserted their occupation due to various reasons. At present, only 40 weavers are engaged in weaving Udupi sarees. There is a need to revive Udupi saree,” he added.

The campaign is initiated by Kadike Trust of Karkala, Charaka, and Desi of Bengaluru. A series of programmes will be organised as a part of the campaign to promote Udupi saree, said Prasanna.

He said the campaign aims to create awareness on the legacy of Udupi saree, support for the weavers, use of natural colours in saree weaving, training youth in weaving and
providing marketing facilities for the sarees across the country.

Prasanna said Talipadi Weavers Association is active in Kinnigoli in Dakshina Kannada. Kadike Trust will impart training to those interested in weaving.
