Chancellor gives green signal for Tulu courses3 courses in Mlore varsity under correspondence programme

As a result of the continues efforts by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, the Mangalore University has received green signal from the Chancellor (Governor of Karnataka) to introduce Certificate, Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma courses in Tulu under Correspondence Programme in the academic year 2012-13. 

To popularise Tulu language, the Government of Karnataka has agreed to introduce Tulu as the third language for the students of sixth standard to tenth standard from the Academic year 2010- 11 in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Now the introduction of Tulu correspondence courses in University will be a giant step in the process. 

Eligibility 

Any candidate who has passed SSLC examination conducted by Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board or any other equivalent course is eligible to apply for the certificate course in Tulu. 

For Diploma course in Tulu, candidates should have passed Pre-University examinations or any other equivalent course. Candidates who have passed certificate course in Tulu are also eligible to apply for Diploma course. 

Candidates who have passed any three years Bachelor Degree course from any university and completed diploma course in Tulu can apply for the PG Diploma course in Tulu. 

Subjects

In the certificate course in Tulu, students can get the basic knowledge of Tulu language. In diploma course, Tulu language, literature, folklore, culture and communication will be taught. In PG Diploma course, students can learn the similarities and differences between Tulu and other Dravidian languages.  

Syllabus 

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Mangalore University Kannada Department Professor and Tulu correspondence courses’ syllabus formation committee Chairman Dr K Abhay Kumar said that the committee will form the syllabus with the coordination of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy before April 15. “The draft copy of the syllabus should be approved by different bodies of the university. We are going to introduce the correspondence courses from the next academic year,” he added. 

Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy President Umanatha A Kotyan said that the Academy has started its efforts to introduce Tulu in University in 2009. “However, with the consent of the Governor, our dream has come true. Now Education Department has major role to play. We will cooperate with them in the process including forming the syllabus,” he said adding that the Academy won’t let the process to go slow. 

Medium of instruction

About the medium of instruction, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy Registrar Chandrahas Rai said that, it is hardly possible to use Tulu script for instruction as very few people know to write and read Tulu script. “The medium of instruction and examination will be in Tulu or Kannada,” he said. The introduction of new courses will not only help develop the language, but also and to conduct more researches on the language.
