A local Congress leader was brutally murdered as he came out of a mosque at Aivarnad village in Sullia on Friday. He was president of the coastal unit of the KPCC’s minority wing.
Ismail Nelyamajalu, 52, went to the Sullia court to attend a hearing and visited a mosque at Aivarnad on his way back. As he started walking towards his car after praying at the mosque, the assailants hacked him to death.
Though Nelyamajalu carried a licensed pistol, he did not get the opportunity to use it. Nelyamajalu and his wife, Waheeda Ismail, were attacked at Gandhinagar in Sullia two years ago. Following the attack, police security was provided to Waheeda. She did not accompany her husband on what turned out to be his last visit. Sniffer dogs and forensic experts combed the crime scene.
