The Congress won the Rajarajeshwari Nagar Assembly seat by a margin of over 25,400 votes.
According to poll officials, Congress' N Munirathna secured 1,08,064 votes, against his nearest BJP rival Tulsi Muniraju Gowda's 82,572 votes. While JD(S) candidate G H Ramachandra, who joined the party, after quitting BJP ahead of the polls, came a distant third by securing 60,360 votes.
Munirathna said that it is not religion or caste, but it is the development that people have voted for. Reacting to Opposition party leader B S Yeddyurappa’s statement alleging that it is “money power” that has won, Munirathna said that it was Yeddyurappa who tried to buy MLA’s to win the trust vote. He said that Yeddyurappa is such a tall leader and such statements should not come from him. As the result shows the clear majority for Munirathna, Congress supporters burst into celebrations on the streets of the constituency.
On Monday, 54% voters had used their franchise in Rajarajeshwari Nagar amid minor confrontations between rival parties.
A major row had erupted over electoral malpractices and seizure of nearly 10,000 voter ID cards from an apartment in the constituency, ahead of the May 12 elections.
Muniratna had won the seat in the previous assembly.
