District farmers suffer due to unseasonal rainCrop loss in Kolar estimated to be Rs 9.18 crore

The loss of crop in the 6,318 hectares in the district has been estimated to be Rs 9.18 crore. According to the Agriculture Department officers, Ragi grown in 3,690 hectares was damaged causing Rs 1.44 crore.

The rain has not spared the horticultural crops too. The estimated loss of the crop (in 2628 hectares) is Rs 7.74 crore. 

The unseasonal rain that was mostly triggered by Jal cyclone has damaged at least 20 percent of ready-to-harvest ragi. However, crops in Malur and Bangarpet have not been affected by the  rain ravage, said the department officials.

During the monsoon period, ragi was sown in 57, 153 hectares of which the rain has damaged crop in 3,690 hectares.

Among the horticultural crops, the major crops like tomato and potato have also destroyed. The potato crop in the district is affected by blight disease and the damage is estimated to be Rs 7.74 crore. A comprehensive report on rain damage is being drafted, said Department Deputy Director Dhananjay.

Apart from this, the rain has caused damage to as many as 89 houses causing Rs 4.18 lakh, said Assistant Commissioner R S Peddappaiah.

According to the rain damage report that will be submitted to the government, a total of 24 houses in Kolar taluk are damaged (Rs 3.18 lakh), 15 houses in Mulbagal (Rs 1,41,500), 39 houses in Bangarpet and 11 houses in Malur. The total amount of loss is estimated at Rs 4,18,655.

No compensation

According to the rules, farmers who have suffered 50 percent of crop loss are eligible for the compensation. But no taluk in the district has reported that much of loss.

“It would be difficult for farmers to claim compensation. However, measures would be taken to provide suitable compensation to affected farmers, the officials said.
